The Art of Crochet
Crochet is a handicraft that has an unknown origin. There is not much evidence before the 1800s. The absolute basic using a hook to draw a loop of material (thread, yarn, wire, etc.) through the previous loop. This is continued, working through the previous row until a fabric is achieved. Items can range from the most delicate of lace to stuffed animals to chunky blankets.
Due to the fact that crochet is not suited to mass production, it is generally passed from person-to-person through informal channels. Once a practitioner has achieved basic knowledge, patterns may be found in numerous places including pattern books, specialty websites (such as Ravelry), and from social media. With more than 20 sizes of hooks to choose from, and numerous types of yarn & other materials to loop together, it is entirely possible to easily personalize finished products. This allows crochet to function as a form of Folk Art.
